STORAGE LIST SERVER
Description
A list server is an e-mail communication facility. A user SUBSCRIBES to the list server, and then can easily communicate with all other users who have subscribed using e-mail messages. After subscribing, when a user sends an e-mail message to the list server it is broadcast or "reflected" to all other subscribed users. The messages sent to a specific list server usually deal with a specific topic. E-STORM has implemented a list server intended to deal with enterprise storage management topics. Usage of this list server is free of charge, and is available to ESTORM members and non-members.
There are two modes for a user of the list server. In normal mode all e-mail messages will be sent to the user immediately. In digest mode, the e-mail messages will be consolidated into one message per day and a short table of contents will be added to the beginning of the consolidated message.
Subscribing
Subscribing to the list server is a multi-step process. The steps are:
- If you have access to the internet, go to www.topica.com. Type "storage" in the search box and press the "SEARCH" button. Scroll down until you find the "Computer Storage Management Discussion List", click on this link. Click on the link to subscribe, and follow the instructions.
If you do not have access to the internet, send a message to the list server to start the process.
For the storage list send a message to storage-subscribe@topica.com and in the BODY of the note include the text SUBSCRIBE.
- A confirmation request is sent from the list server back to the user. The user sends this confirmation message back to the list server using the reply capability in their e-mail software. This is to prevent someone from subscribing you without your knowledge.
- The user is sent a message indicating that they have been added to the list.
Or subscribe with our online form by

Sending a message
To broadcast a message to all subscribed users send a message to storage@topica.com.
Answering a message
Use the reply function in your e-mail software, type your response and send the message. It should automatically be sent to storage@topica.com.
To unsubscribe
For the storage list send a message to storage-unsubscribe@topica.com and in the BODY of the note include the text UNSUBSCRIBE. You will be sent an email message confirming that you want to be removed from the list. YOU MUST REPLY to this email to complete the removal process.
Hints
For the list server to be successful we need as many subscribers as possible, and we need the subscribers to take an active role. Pass this notice around to your co-workers. When you see a subscriber post a question that you can help with, reply to the message.
When sending a message include a descriptive subject line. It is best to include keywords indicating the platform (MVS, NT, Solaris, AIX…) and product (ADSM, Harbor, EMC, HDS..) if appropriate.
If the e-mail traffic becomes annoying, use the digest feature to reduce the amount of e-mail messages you receive. To change between digest and non-digest modes use the web interface to set your personal options at www.topica.com.
You can also use the web interface to stop messages while you are on vacation.
Digest history is saved in archive files that can be viewed at www.topica.com.
If you get error messages when sending commands (subscribe…) to the list server, try adding the END command on the line after your command. This will cause the list server to stop reading. The errors could be related to automatic footers added by your email software.
Send messages as PLAIN TEXT.

No "mean-spirited" e-mails.
